Department of Justice Enters Lawsuit to Block the State of California's New Electoral Map
The US Justice Department have officially joined a lawsuit brought forward by California Republicans, aiming to halt the state's newly approved congressional redistricting map.
This court case, filed in federal court, challenges the redistricting plan championed by the state's Democratic governor, which was created in response to a GOP redistricting effort in Texas.
"The state's redistricting scheme represents a blatant attempt to seize control that tramples on civil rights and undermines the electoral system," declared the nation's top law enforcement official.
Democrats have voiced assurance that the redistricting plan will withstand legal scrutiny.
"These opponents were defeated in the election and they are likely to also lose in court," stated a representative for the governor.
Legal Basis
The lawsuit claims that California's map improperly used racial considerations to heavily favor Latino communities in contravention of the federal constitution.
"It is unconstitutional to use race as a proxy to further partisan goals, but that is exactly what the California General Assembly did with the redistricting measure," argued a high-ranking representative from the Civil Rights Division.
Political Context
The legal battle constitutes the most significant response by the Democratic party in the continuing political battle that began in Texas and has spread across various parts of the country.
In contrast to elsewhere, where Republican state legislatures have enacted gerrymanders, California's plan needed voter approval, which it received with approximately two-thirds of the vote.
National Implications
The Democratic party need to gain just a small number of GOP-controlled House seats to take control of the House of Representatives in next year's midterm election.
The political group controlling the majority will shape the remaining period of the current administration, determining whether a GOP-controlled legislature will continue to deliver its political program or face resistance, congressional probes and possible additional obstacles.
